Metal Gear!

Image
A few years ago a friend came over with his Gamecube, and he made my brother play Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes all the way through until he beat it. I only saw about half the game because I had to work that day, and honestly, form what I saw, I didn't see the appeal in it. Jump ahead to about a year ago, when a different friend told me to get Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker on the PSP. Since I had never personally played the MGS series and forgot all about that Gamecube game, I was only vaguely interested. I figured I should probably at least learn about the story and gameplay of the first games and decide from there if it is something I'd like. Heck, I didn't even remember that the main character is named Snake. Reading up on it, I found that the timeline for the series is confusing. The original couple of games lacked the "Solid" part in their title and were on the MSX, a home computer system that didn't do well outside of Japan. The first

About the lack of updates anywhere

Image
I've been really busy lately. I know it's an overused excuse to explain lack of updates, but I really am! Here's why. I'm participating in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). Basically, you work your butt off to write a total of 50,000 words towards the start of your very own novel by the end of November. That averages to 1,666 words per day, since November is a 30-day period. It takes up most of my time trying to keep up with it. You can stalk my progress here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/759386 (Click "NaNo Stats"). In other news, I've recently fallen hard for the Metal Gear Solid series of games. I might post about them later. EDIT: I did it!

Movie List

This is a list I'm keeping of all the movies I've ever seen. Feel free to ignore it :) I make no judgment here on whether any of these movies are any good. Includes movies I've seen in school. Probably missing some. I've seen EVERY James Bond movie, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the Harry Potters, so I'm not listing them all. General 101 Dalmatians (1996) Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995) Addams Family, The (1991) Adventures of Pinocchio, The (1996) After the Thin Man (1936) Animal Crackers (1930) Apollo 13 (1995) Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997) Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999) Austin Powers: Goldmember (2002) Babe (1995) Babe: Pig in the City (1998) Back to the Future (1985) Batman Begins (2005) Batman Forever (1995) A Beautiful Mind (2001) Bedazzled (2000) Bio-Dome (1995) Birds, The (1963) Blazing Saddles (1974) Blues Brothers, The (19

X-COM: Apocalypse - Game Editors

Image
Previous --- Index So you're getting frustrated by all the agents you've lost to the brainsuckers. Or maybe the enemy UFOs are way too powerful and keep destroying your hovercars in one hit. Don't feel bad for resorting to game editors. I did. Here's a little guide on how to fix yourself up using a couple of game editors. Midnight Editor The first editor I'm introducing is Midnight Editor, made by Marcin Wichary. You can download it and some other tools here: http://www.devisraad.com/xcom/apoc.htm Open the editor, click the "Savedgames" tab, and load up your game (it must be a save in the Cityscape). This editor is very easy to use. The "Bases/Buildings" tab allows you to finish all buildings being built with one button, and allows you to change the cost of buildings. You can also easily modify your cash on hand. In the "Vehicles in Stock" tab you can change the price of vehicles at the store and how many are

X-COM: Apocalypse - Combat Basics

Image
Previous --- Index --- Next You can choose turn-based or real-time. I like turn-based, so I'll be talking about how to play it that way. In real-time combat, you can only give basic directions to your men. They don't follow your orders very well and tend to shoot willy-nilly, wasting a lot of ammo. Before the battle starts you can assign your men into squads. Drag and drop portraits to reform the squads. You can also check equipment. This is the Battlescape. See where the 3, 3, 2 is? That's where you manage your squads. Double-click one of these, and you select that entire squad. To select one person in a squad, single-click the squad, then click the person's portrait. I selected the squad with 2 people, and then clicked the first portrait, Michiko. You can double-click a portrait to center on that unit. The "60" over her head is her "Time Units" (TUs). It's how much action she has left to move this turn. Yo

X-COM: Apocalypse - Beginner's Guide

Image
Index --- Next X-COM: Apocalypse is a great game, but it can be hard for first-time players to figure out what to do. So I've made this little guide to help a friend get started. When you start a new campaign, you can choose the difficulty. From what I gather, this mainly affects how quickly the aliens develop new technology. After this, you will see the game's overworld window, which is called the Cityscape (this is likely a tribute to the previous games' Geoscape. In this game we only have access to a single city, not the entire globe, hence the name change). You will be centered on your base. Whenever you start a new game, the base given to you is randomly chosen from a pool of possible base locations. If you click the map view button (the second from the top on the left-hand side of the console), you'll enter a top-down view of the city. Use this to get an idea of where your base is in relation to the rest of the city. I find that the map vie
