BioShock - Story - Contains Spoilers

Image
Previous The game's plot unfolds from the conversation between Atlas and other NPCs, and through the recordings you find. People in Rapture used tape recorders as diaries. Through these you are given a glimpse of what the city once was, and how it became the mess that it is now. You also see ghosts sometimes, a side effect of the plasmids. The screen gets all fuzzy and gray like white noise when you're near a ghost scene. So it seems that splicing started out as a luxury, as the advertisements found throughout the world indicate. Want to be manlier? Get the SportBoost gene tonic. Starting to go bald? It's in your genes; there's a tonic for that, too! And people went for it. But they didn't know the side effects. Pretty much, you grow crazy without regular consumption of a substance called ADAM (hurrrr ADAM to go with EVE). ADAM is harvested from certain sea slugs. But the slugs simply don't produce enough, and so Rapture descended into cha...

BioShock - Environments & Misc.

Previous --- Next By the way, this game isn't really for the squeamish. It can get pretty gruesome. When you shoot/hit an enemy, raspberry jam splatters out. It's not realistic, but it is graphic. They also get 3rd degree burns when hit with incinerate. I heard this effect was censored in the German version. Dead bodies are pretty common, too, lying around in every level. In the second level you go through a medical facility, and there are some mutilated corpses around... In the demented doctor's surgery, some of his patients (or, rather, victims) are hung up above his surgery table, looking like they were crucified. There are quite a number of hung corpses decorating other levels too. A body strung up in a freezer. There are also two points where I looked away from the screen because I was really bothered by the violence: a splicer getting impaled by a Big Daddy's drill when you're first shown the relationship between Big Daddy and the Little ...

BioShock - Enemies

Previous --- Next If you're wondering why I keep posting about this game, it's because I can't stop thinking about it. It's engrossing. I guess I'm strange like that :)  I don't get that much time to play it... Anyway, one of the things I like about this game are the type of enemy. The enemies are called splicers. They're average, everyday people (sort of). Not aliens or zombies or terrorists or soldiers, as per other FPS standards. They are normal people who've become something less than human from abusing the genetic modifications available to them. Okay maybe this one isn't that human o_o But remember, there are freaking vending machines that sell genetic modifications! Like candy! Welcome to the Gatherer's Garden! Atlas explains it best. Apparently, no one knew the side effects of splicing (dementia and insanity) until after it had become standard in society. So basically, what's left in Rapture are the craz...

BioShock - Arsenal

Previous --- Next The weapons in BioShock. Hell yeah. So, to differentiate itself from other shooter games, BioShock gives you the option of using plasmids (genetic modifications) to equip yourself with. Attack plasmids can be thought of as magic in a role-playing game. Their use requires EVE, which is the blue bar under your health meter. You can recover EVE with hypodermic needles that contain the serum.  There's an animation for shooting them up, like reloading a weapon.  It was kinda disturbing the first couple of times but you get used to it. Electrobolt allows you shoot electricity to temporarily stun enemies. It will do massive damage to anyone stupid enough to be standing in water when you shoot it (including yourself). It also stuns turrets, security bots, and cameras, giving you time to hack or destroy them. It can trigger open some electronically-locked security doors, like in the above picture. A splicer stunned by Electrobolt. Incinerate...

BioShock - Intro

Next My brother bought BioShock a couple of weeks ago, and after watching him play, I knew I -had- to play it myself. So I commandeered his computer. For those unfamiliar with the game, it's a first person shooter (think Half-Life, Unreal, etc.). It only has a story mode -- no online play. I love it. Here's scenes from the game's introductory level, which gives you a tantalizingly small amount of backstory. This entire sequence and more, or so I'm told, is playable in the free demo: http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_bioshock_downloads.html It is, unfortunately, almost 2 GB in size. But I urge you to try it out if it interests you at all.  The sequence loses a lot of magic when you aren't seeing it with the sound effects, music, and voice acting. Anyway... It's 1960. You are Jack, the lone survivor of an airplane crash. Heck, the game starts you off swimming to the surface, surrounded by flaming wreckage. Looking around, you see an i...
