Dark Wizard 54

It's been longer between updates than I wanted. I've been busy playing Skyrim WITH WORK

yeah let's go with that

Anyway, we're backtracking a little via search party because we never visited the town on the island on this map.

Nope.

Hey, I already made a joke about it being a party town.

Priest Robe. Conveniently, Rogutaan is a priest. Inconveniently, it cannot be worn by the neutral alignment.

In a small tuft of forest to the right of the castle on the island, you can find this. An herb-type item, it can be used by a unit to heal all of its HP -- or can be sold for 500 gold.

Also on this island is a sword in a stone (I had marked it on the map, but, again, we never bothered visiting the island, for the most part).

...This is not Excalibur.

In a forest in the northwest area of the map, you can find Dragon Armor. It actually has less defense than the priest robe, but it's still a very good armor for warriors.

We also return to this map to investigate the griffin problem.

So, now we have a Griffin. It's basically the same a as a manticore.

We're just gonna name it "Griff" for now.

The griffin can only be caught at "EVEN" time. If you're going to get it during a search party -- which you probably will, considering you need to learn about griffins in the map after this map -- you'll have to use the Rest option at an inn to make time pass if it isn't evening time.

There's no inn in any city on this map, so I had to send another unit on a search party to a different map just to pass the time. What a pain. The griffin is worth it, though, as we will learn later.

Only warriors can catch a griffin, so send a warlord/paladin or a ranger.

Oh, and the griffin takes up a character slot in the army. So, if your army was full, you would be unable to recruit one unless you made room by deleting someone. I planned ahead for this, so we had room for it.

Lastly, Link is supposed to be recovering, but he felt the need to explore the most recent area.

In the middle of the mountain range that separates the roads here there is a funeral bell. How it got here is a mystery for the ages.

I've never seen this item before, so I'm not sure what it is/does.

Anyway, let's make some actual progress.

By the king's order, we're doubling back and attacking from a different region, hoping to catch Karmak by surprise. He doesn't seem all that prepared to meet us.

This map has lower-tier enemies than we are used to. This is actually supposed to be the first Karmak map, so that's why.

Boxxy desired to go hunt griffins, so we let him, and he sent a tame one to help us! It has lovely feathers, I think.

Here's our griffin. I never showed off the status page, so here it is. (You can access it by using the menu button, then choosing "STRE").

It's fairly self-explanatory. Notice the Spec. Attack is blank; like our manticores, it has no special attack. Also notice that there is no Spec. Defense at all. As far as I'm aware, normal defense works as both, but I could be making this up!

See that mobility at 12? That means it can fly 12 hexes in one move. Zoom! I love flying units. Only our harpies can fly farther at 13 mobility. Our manticores have 10 mobility.

"Move type" is the type of terrain the unit is best at moving in (it will be able to move its maximum mobility if it is traveling through this terrain type). It doesn't really apply to flying units. Strangely, dwarves have "Forest" as their best movement terrain. This is not Lord of the Rings!

According to the manual, "Terrain" is the current terrain type the unit is in, but this is a lie; it kept reporting that units in a forest or on a mountain were on normal ground, and it told me that a dragon standing on a road was in a desert. Maybe it's a bug.

Anyway...

A lich got in Susan's way, so she blew it away.

Our beautiful new griffin quickly captured the nearby city.

We have company.

He hit almost double the poor dragon's Max HP.

Our second paladin! Third if you count Link.

Also, as you can see, the lich took revenge on Susan for blowing it off like that.

It doesn't take long for our flyers to take the next town on the road, too. And a berserker? Pfft. It's nothing to us, now. That's Invye's ice attack on it: half its HP in one go.

Sansha visited the city.

One of our men has tried riding Fluffy, but it is a very bony dragon. Not to mention the smell of rotting flesh that it gives off, being undead and all.

You should be nicer to your elders!

Can't miss it.

Maybe Limelle can -- no, no I suppose not.

The little kid kind of told us that.

I said no! What are you doing!

In honesty, I was just testing if you could overwrite status ailments. Apparently you can, since she was paralyzed and still eligible to become a goat.

Cela 20th

While our humans are taking their time, our monsters have stumbled into a road block.

Sansha has made it to the next village already.

... nice hair ... no wonder she was scared.

Look at that face. He is so excited.

If you say no:

Aww. I was hoping he'd lower the price.

If you say yes:

If you talk to him again:

Just taking a gander at our inventory. Don't forget about the talisman, it's important.

How did Vian die? That is one of our country's biggest mysteries. With my luck, he's still alive on a hill somewhere, giving advice, and we'll run into him in a bit!

Only "seems" wrong? Ah, well.

There is a strange-looking forest near the city.

But apparently Sansha was just seeing things.

Post update note: apparently I was supposed to use the talisman as an item on the spot instead of search. I assumed I had missed a town's advice to trigger the quest. Welp. We'll see it next update!

Poor griffin is susceptible to paralysis, just like the manticores.

Sansha has made her way to Buklauu and gave him the goat's blood. I have my reservations about letting the mayor go through with this, but the king gave our priest the go ahead.

When transferring items, the unit doing the transferring uses up its turn, but the receiving unit is free to move.

So without further adieu.

Buklauu reports that everything went well.

Before our turn.

After our turn. We're like an unstoppable moving wall.

You can't set a hellhound on fire -- stop trying!

Cela 21st

We start the day off with a promotion! Our final berserker is now a warlord.

How many warlords does that make? I've lost track!

Despite Bob's failure, the warlock never had a chance to cast any magic. Mugenai is a great shot.

The warlock didn't do anything at all last turn. He wasn't even resting. It might not have a spell to attack with; if it's a goat-spell warlock, it wouldn't use it on our already-paralyzed Squishy. But one of our liches is in range, so maybe it's just a buggy AI.

Buklauu now has the "Resurect" spell available, but it cannot be used because no one in our army is dead.

Yeah, we have way too many warlords.
