BioShock - Intro

My brother bought BioShock a couple of weeks ago, and after watching him play, I knew I -had- to play it myself. So I commandeered his computer.



For those unfamiliar with the game, it's a first person shooter (think Half-Life, Unreal, etc.). It only has a story mode -- no online play.

I love it.

Here's scenes from the game's introductory level, which gives you a tantalizingly small amount of backstory.

It is, unfortunately, almost 2 GB in size. But I urge you to try it out if it interests you at all.  The sequence loses a lot of magic when you aren't seeing it with the sound effects, music, and voice acting.

Anyway...

It's 1960. You are Jack, the lone survivor of an airplane crash.

Heck, the game starts you off swimming to the surface, surrounded by flaming wreckage.



Looking around, you see an island with a huge lighthouse on it and head towards it.



There, you enter the building.



... and are immediately locked inside.



With no other choice, you head further in. The path lights up in front of you, guiding you in. There are flags, signs, and plaques on the walls but their meaning escapes you.  Calming violin music begins to play.



You reach a bathysphere floating on a pool of water. You enter and pull the lever. The door closes and it starts to move.



Looking out the window, you see that you are descending.



And then the view is blocked as a screen pulls down and a video starts playing.





"I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question:
Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?

No, says the man in Washington; it belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican; it belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow; it belongs to everyone.

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose...

Rapture!

A city where the artist would not fear the censor.
Where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality.
Where the great would not be constrained by the small.
And with the sweat of your brow,
Rapture can become your city as well."

Rapture ... after Wold War II, many were disgusted with society and its restrictions. Andrew Ryan was a man with a vision: create a new society under the sea, where people could truly be free.

They said it was impossible to build Rapture under the sea, but, he says later in the game, it was impossible to build it anywhere else (due to what it represents).

The screen pulls up and you see your first view of the underwater city, a bunch of towers connected by bridges. Fish swim by, etc. Neon signs advertise shops and products.



You start hearing a real-time radio transmission - there's a radio in the bathysphere. Two men, Atlas and Johnny, are discussing your arrival. Johnny is told to go meet you.







The bathysphere docks into a building, and you're treated to a gruesome sight.

Johnny is talking to a ... woman carrying hooks, trying to appease her, but she's not buying it.



She attacks him and guts him, killing him.



She turns to look at you, thick glass between you and her. You get your first view of a "splicer"; she's bloody all over.



Then she jumps up and begins attacking the bathysphere, trying to get in, to get at you. From her attacks the bathysphere's control system is ruined. Pulling the lever does nothing; you can no longer return to the surface from here.

Atlas calls to you on the radio, your only friend in this place. He opens the sphere for you remotely after the splicer has given up. Atlas later begs you to kindly help him reach his wife and kid who he's hidden in a submarine, and then you can escape together.  (I love his voice and slight accent)



The female splicer is still around, though.



Atlas remotely controls a spotlight; at least you know where she is now.



Then he sends in a bot to attack her.  She climbs up a wall to escape.



Atlas also tells you to grab some kind of weapon... for as you travel through Rapture, it becomes apparent that something is horribly, horribly wrong here.



Equivalent to Half-Life 2's crowbar.


This guy attacks you out of nowhere with a lead pipe.



Soon, your path ends in a room with a vending machine. There are advertisements all over the walls here.





Gatherer's Garden: Genetic Modifications



The machine is vending out... hypodermic needles? What?



No word from Atlas about this... hmm... Ah, why not? Time to shoot up.



Oh, now he starts talking. What the hell? Genetic modification?



You reel in shock and pain. In the delirium you see thugs standing over you, talking about you.



A bellow is heard from far off. The thugs apparently want nothing to do with the source, and so they run off.
