BioShock - Enemies

Previous --- Next

If you're wondering why I keep posting about this game, it's because I can't stop thinking about it. It's engrossing. I guess I'm strange like that :)  I don't get that much time to play it...

Anyway, one of the things I like about this game are the type of enemy.

The enemies are called splicers. They're average, everyday people (sort of). Not aliens or zombies or terrorists or soldiers, as per other FPS standards. They are normal people who've become something less than human from abusing the genetic modifications available to them.

Okay maybe this one isn't that human o_o

But remember, there are freaking vending machines that sell genetic modifications! Like candy!

Welcome to the Gatherer's Garden!

Atlas explains it best.

Apparently, no one knew the side effects of splicing (dementia and insanity) until after it had become standard in society. So basically, what's left in Rapture are the crazies who killed all the other inhabitants.  Some wear masks to hide their shame over what they've become.

And the splicers that you encounter think YOU'RE the invading monster. Sort of feel bad for them, since this is not exactly untrue. You pretty much kill/destroy everything in your path.

Oh, and the splicers talk to each other, themselves, and you. They taunt you when you hide away from them.

I overheard one splicer saying something to the effect of, "Steinman [a cosmetic surgeon] will fix me up, you'll see!" It's rather pathetic. I felt bad for him until I, uh, ended his misery. With a shotgun.  There's also amusing religious ones singing the "Jesus Loves Me" hymn. And doctors who say, "I promised to do no harm!" as they swing a pipe at you.

Sadly, the game only contains five basic types of splicers. So there isn't much variety... You can even be attacked by two or more of the same exact splicer at once from overuse of the same character models.

These clones died together.

Splicer types
Thuggish Splicer - uses melee weapon (pipe/wrench/flashlight)
Leadhead Splicer - uses guns
Nitro Splicer - uses grenades
Houdini Splicer - uses plasmids (mostly incinerate and teleport)
Spider Splicer - can climb on ceilings and do ninja flips, throws hooks, moves around a lot - i.e. annoying

Spider Slicer in mid-flip.

There are male and female of all types too.

There are also machines. These can be hacked to target enemies instead of you.

Turrets shoot machine gun rounds, or in some cases, rockets (ouch). This is an unfriendly turret, as indicated by the red light.

Security bots fly around and shoot you.

When you're spotted by a security camera, it will send out an infinite supply of security bots after you for a whole minute. If you kill a bot, another will come after.

You can temporarily disable machines easily with electrobolt. Once disabled, you can start the hacking mini-game. Cameras don't need to be bolted to be hacked --- just get close enough to it.

If you successfully hack a turret, it'll fire on enemies, including other turrets. Cameras will send security bots after splicers it detects.

This is a friendly camera. Cameras move on a set path, but they can swivel to look straight at you.

She's watching you...

From the half-life wikia.

Eh, wrong game.

Friendly Security bots, like this one, will fly around and follow you and attack enemies.

This enemy bot got stuck and wouldn't attack me.

You can have up to 2 bots at one time. They get in your way, though. I've shotgun'd my own bot before.

Before you hack, you'll get a difficulty rating for the hack. You can pay for an automatic victory (the BUYOUT option), or use an autohack tool if you have one.

Otherwise, you can cancel the hack or start the mini-game. It's pretty much Pipe Dream. You have to create a path from the start to the finish.  Clicking on a ? tile reveals a pipe.  Click and drag a pipe onto another to exchange their place.  All the while a liquid will start flowing through the pipes from the start.

The difficulty gets so hard later in the game that you'll be using a lot of autohack tools.  Or saving your file before starting a hack.  If you fail, you take damage.  If the flow hit an alarm tile, you'll be attacked by bots as if you triggered a camera.

The "Increase Flow Speed" button is used to end the hack when you've successfully completed the path.

Ohhhhh...

And this post wouldn't be complete without a mention of the game's most iconic character.

The Big Daddy. Heck, it's what's on the game's cover.

Actually, he ties somewhat into the game's story, so I'll go over him when I make a post on that :)
