Dark Wizard 46

First off, we sold Athena's Orb, priceless treasure that it is, and nearly doubled our funds! Soon I can make plans to better-equip our troops. But to do that, I'd like to have Willis restored. If we're going to spend the money, it should be on top-of-the-line materials, right? From what we have learned, the answer to the petrified village's problems may lie to the east.

Shire, the purple castle, is occupied by Velonese's men.

Since we failed to defend Shire, we've decided to split our troops. Half will be sent back around to reclaim the capital, and the other half will be heading forward to press on against Sheena.

We know that Sheena expects us to move north, so we're not going to do that. Instead, we will head further east.

Then, when the Shire team has completed its mission, we'll reunite and advance on her last remaining castles and surround her!

We can't enter that map yet, anyway, because we don't own a castle in it.

In all honesty, the game has been fairly easy so far, so I thought I'd make it harder by pretending that only half my troops are available for this next map.

That's the plan, at least. But I'm sure you know how plans go.

In any case, I am sticking with the main team, moving forward against Sheena. This region contains a vast desert. Our men will not be able to survive for long in it, so we'll have to stick to the road along the shore.

There used to be a shrine to the Goddess here, but all our scouts have found was a swamp in the middle of the desert. It was noteworthy enough to be on the map.

All of our flying creatures have been sent to Shire, so progress might be slow if our men get bottlenecked on the road. There is an entourage of skeletons occupying the nearest city, and they could easily get in our way.

At the start of the map, Amon thinks to himself.

There's a reason he mentions Goddess Sabrina on this map -- there's a quest involving an artifact related to her here. We don't have the proper quest items yet, though. I, uh, forgot to get them.

Oh, I forgot to mention!

Susan finally reached us,

escorted by Link, who is now a ninja!

He has learned to move so quickly that he doesn't need his horse anymore.

The ninja doesn't have any special skills or anything. He's a standard melee unit -- but he does have access to the ninja-only equipment we've seen for sale in the Shinobi village.

Oh, to become a ninja, the character has to be a human melee-type unit that is class 2 or higher. The class-level doesn't matter because the ninja will always start with the same stats. So... I would have been better off promoting Vespera or Maddimist (who are both only class 2) instead of losing a class 4 Paladin, but oh well!

You can only get one ninja unit. It's recommended just to hire a class 2 fighter right after defeating Aracna. That way you aren't losing a unit that is trained up like I did.

Siang 26th

A wyvern swooped in from the desert and breathed fire on Rogutaan.

Wyverns are arguably the most powerful dragon class. They have an incredible movement range because they are flyers, and they have a strong fire breath attack, and they have a lot of HP. Sheena can only summon one each turn, but if she keeps at it, we could be overwhelmed by these tanky, hard-hitting dragons. This has happened before in previous games I've played.

Sheena is the only demon lord who can summon wyverns. On the player side, leader Kristell's dragons can become wyverns. When playing as her, it's very fun to have an army composed mainly of wyverns and have them swoop in and destroy everything.

Their fire breath attack will be fairly effective against undead -- our liches and our dragons.

The wyvern is an ugly creature. But who am I to talk when our own dragons are undead?

It seems to be susceptible to the druid's mind magic.

Level 3 healing? On Euld? Color me surprised!

None of our units have been learning fire spells, so Susan can show this one off for us.

Link's hitting 3-digit damage, just like Ladywinter.

After our turn, the confused Wyvern attacked Tadleer (with melee). Surprisingly, Sheena did not Megarestore it.

She did, however, send a trio of wyverns flying in formation across the desert.

I thought Squishy could tank the Wyvern's counterattack,

but as it turns out, Wyverns are wind element, and Squishy, being undead, is weak against it.

Euld's Meteor Strike does 101 damage.

Then Kefkai attacks for 69 damage.

Ladywinter does 92 damage.

Like harpies, wyverns seem susceptible to earth.

+38 HP, + 3 Attack, +1 Defense, +1 Mobility

That's the max-level earth spell. So when I thought the wyverns were going to be hard, well, I was wrong.

Siang 27th - Morning

A trifecta of wyverns reached Link. Tadleer has found them difficult to paralyze.

Susan attempted to blow one away with her wind magic, but it failed.

The Blow Off spell is the 3rd level enemy-teleport spell. The name makes it seem like a wind spell, but the graphic looks like fire?

Rogutaan didn't.

At the end of our turn, Squishy is still hurting from the first wyvern, so he's given a megarestore. It really would only take one lucky wyvern attack to take him out.

Siang 27th - Noon

The confused wyvern attacked its fellow and missed, but the other counterattacked it for about 100 damage. A griffin flew in to attack Rogutaan. One of the wyverns flew around the sea to attack Fluffy.

Susan's wind magic failed again. Fortunately someone else is on the job.

After being weakened so, Fluffy and Somma were able to finish it off.

Buklauu, having perfected his healing already, decides to follow Euld's magic.

Ah, of course, Sheena could not let her poor, confused wyvern die.

Uh, that's not a wyvern (and also not a threat to me at all).

Siang 27th - Evening

Although the wyvern naturally recovered from its confusion, all it took was Limelle's magic to finish it off.

The last remaining wyvern fled back to Sheena's castle.

Boxxy put an arrow in the enemy bishop and also liberated a village, earning him a promotion.

Ranger: +42 HP, +15 Attack, +2 Defense, +1 Mobility (+1 horse)

Siang 27th - Night

Link strikes out ahead in an attempt to distract the skeleton and wyrm army heading toward us.

Banquo finally became as powerful as its fellow liches.

Young mage Sairek learned a new spell. I wonder if he was influenced by Limelle.

It's the level 1 earth spell.

Boxxy moved behind Link to provide him with ranged backup.

Link was restored by the king's magic to prepare for the coming overnight assault.

Unfortunately, we made some incorrect assumptions. The enemies ended up ignoring Link completely, instead targeting

our newly-promoted ranger. Poor Boxxy.

Siang 28th

Rogutaan improved his paralysis spell. He's envious of our liches, I think.

Though our liches haven't been so successful as of late, at least, not where it counts. The wyvern that had flown away to lick its wounds has returned, and they failed to stop it.

When Hellburn combated it, he grew in size and strength!

+168 HP, +46 Attack, +33 Special Attack, +5 Defense

Now we have a tanky dragon too!

Limelle also learned that she can cast her most powerful spell from afar. She defeated the last remaining wyvern easily.

Susan improved her teleportation spell, for what it's worth.

Our scouts report there is an enemy monk wandering the desert. I wonder if it's just on a journey for enlightenment.

I just wanted to show the new skeleton enemies we are fighting, the Skeleton Warlords. They have quite a bit of HP, but they're still skeletons and easily defeated. These are the highest class of skeletons.

I was worried when the sniper moved forward, but as it turns out, it didn't have a bow and tried to fight Link in melee combat, with results just as you'd expect.

Link is rather hurt after being attacked by the sniper and after attacking the enchanter.

So I was going to Megarestore him but I missed the magic command and accidentally made Amon rest! Argh!

Nooooo Link!

Oh. That didn't hurt at all. Also she killed her own enchanter! Hot damn, the enemy AI is terrible sometimes.

The other monsters hit by it also took damage and were teleported.

Siang 29th - Morning

Limelle starts out the morning improving her spellbook.

So did Euld.

Vespera earned her promotion by bravely approaching Sheena,

who reacted as expected.

Siang 29th - Noon

Although we liberated the town days ago, no one had visited it to see how its citizens have held up until now.

So, the shrine to the Goddess ran afoul of, well, foul magic. Maybe the wandering monk used to live there, and the sandstorm has addled its mind.

It's a pity the shrine is gone; some of our men are rather religious and wished to pray there.

Does he mean Gilliam or his grandfather? I don't think a spell to revive the dead equates to immortality, either, but stranger things have happened in this world.

Unfortunately, Sairek reports that the priest did not know where we could find such a thing.

Vespera had been teleported by Sheena's magic right onto the center of another city, where she was regaled with a village folktale.

At this point Vespera admits her eyes had glazed over, but the old lady continued.

A touching tale, perhaps, but I only care about the harp.

I have no tears left to shed.

You WHAT?

It's called "money"

Vespera questioned what they would be made of, and he wouldn't answer.

The villagers are candid, I will give them that much.

In other news, Sheena has a new favorite spell.

But it takes so much out of her, apparently, that she can only summon weak monsters as backup.

Siang 29th - Night

+27 HP, +2 Attack, +1 Defense, Mobility +1

Sairek earned his second promotion, but he learned no new spells.

The desert-wandering monk has yet to collapse of heat exhaustion. Maybe there really is something to asceticism?

I really don't know what this monk was doing the entire battle. I think its AI bugged out. It literally kept wandering around the desert. It never came near us.

Siang 30th - Morning

Link's fast ninja feet took him to the city north of the desert.

Someone joked that I should try to write to her.

I think I have better things to do. Maybe after the war... but I digress.

This appears to be a cameo of Robin, one of the other possible leaders.

I pray that this means we'll find the cure for the people of Willis.

Or perhaps she was talking to Link. What could a ninja be thinking about?

Ninja babes, of course.

((in-joke))

Alternatively, it could mean that Amon's thoughts on defeating Sabrina is... sanctioned by Sabrina?

That spoony bard! Well, it's certainly lucky that we are positioned at Tara castle right now.

We had some people dredge up the river,

and found the harp still in one piece. It must be magical to survive for so long in a river. Then again, it is a mermaid's harp. It might be used to being underwater.

It's quite a beautiful harp. The fin is a nice touch.

All in all, it was a successful day, indeed, as we forced Sheena to retreat. A great end to this month.

I wonder how our troops at Shire are doing?
