Dark Wizard 56

We have two choices:

1. Go back around and then go north of the Baltrik region. With this method, we'd take both of Karmak's remaining castles at once.

2. Or head north of the last region we were in and then make our way east.

I'll cut to the chase: although in theory option 1 would allow us to kill two birds with one stone, we can't actually win the battle without clearing the 2nd option region anyway.

Not much to say about this area. The huge Flayrona sea is between us and Karmak, so we have to make the long trip up and around it.

Karmak taunts us,

but the king pointedly ignores him.

Strategy first! We'll send our flyers straight east to cause general mayhem.

Boxxy, our griffin tamer, joins the Sharktan clan.

He can move much farther now.

Any fighter-type unit can become a griffin rider. The unit's strengths and weaknesses becomes that of a griffin. This means Boxxy is more effective against undead, but also significantly less effective against humanoid units and dragons. It also means enemy warrior units will kill him easily. I prefer to make the griffinrider an archer unit because of this; since he can fly, he can usually stay out of the way of trouble.

He still uses a bow to attack at range.

Though the battle animations show a spear.

Cela 22nd

Our harpies have made it across the sea already. Niah moved in to attack a warlock who came too close to shore, and Invye finished it off.

Speaking of water, apparently Susan can fly over water too? Might be because she is undead.

Karmak is more prepared for our flyers than we had suspected.

And now there's no escape!

For anyone!

Feeling bad about the loss of a beautiful harpy, our bishops Euld and Buklauu teamed up, they said, "to replace an ugly unit" with her.

To use the resurrect spell, first, a unit has to be made into a goat.

Where did Bubba go? I'm not sure I want to know.

Invye can now be brought out at the castle.

In effect, the goat unit is sacrificed to bring back the dead unit.

Leaders Armer and Robin have a different version of this spell: rebirth. It doesn't kill the target unit. Instead, it takes a significant amount of HP from the unit. Only units with enough HP qualify. I.e., use a dragon.

Ehm, let's not dwell on Bubba's fate. Krief liberated the north-most village.

The people of this village worship a water spirit named Wendiene, although I don't know how to pronounce her name properly.

Wait, wait, wait. Krief met an elf in this tiny village?  I thought elves avoided human cities like we'd avoid dark and forbidding forests!

Hmm, maybe he only showed himself because Krief is also an elf.

Regardless, the news he brought does not sound promising, although we haven't had much trouble with Karmak so far.

...

We could use a thing of beauty around here.

I mean, our harpies are great, of course, but Susan has been looking so ill lately, and...

"Sio-cool" is this game's "all hail" or similar to that.

Although Bob thought about retreating, he decided to stick it out to give support to his allies.

The king gives his support as well.

Though he needn't have bothered.

[NIAH DIED.]

Cela 23rd

We gave Bob the okay to retreat.

You can see him here. Boxxy has been stalking this skeleton.

Griffins are effective vs. skeletons; he hit ~110 damage on it.

The king tried to save Jim,

but it was futile. He and Niah did a good job distracting Karmak's troops while it lasted, though.

See how bunched up they are against the shore.

A note on Euld: since he is a hobbit, he learns or upgrades a spell every level. At this point, he has actually maxed out all of his spells. If we wanted, we could cheese the system and get him an alignment change at the church in Shire city so that he could learn lawful spells.

Invye's fast flying brought her across the sea already, but she will stay away from Karmak for now.

Using resurrection brings the unit back with 1 HP. She gained 3 from sitting on the castle last turn.

No longer distracted, reports tell us Karmak's men are heading north to meet our men head-on.

Flimzy and Link tried to surround them,

but ended up surrounded themselves.

Cela 24th

After getting some healing from our bishops, Invye is back in the fight.

She's using her normal attack on the lich because her special would make it counter and likely paralyze her. Her normal only does ~30 damage to it, though.

The king has decided, what with the loss of Niah and Jim, not to hold back with his own magic.

Finally, our own liches have arrived.

The death dragons have been using their eruption breath on Susan. She shrugs it off fairly well, but another round would bring her down. Fortunately, Buklauu is right there.

(Being undead she's rather strong vs. earth.)

Our paladins rush forward

and everyone else is doing clean-up.

Vespera was recently given a new weapon; now when a mage tries to defend itself, she can cut right through its staff!

Unlike here when she had been unable to kill the wizard, she kills this warlock instantly.

She has Karmak's attention, now.

Cela 25th

We are quickly cutting a swath through Karmak's troops.

Very quickly.

Susan took a moment to liberate the last city in the area.

Or because he's a Sharktan and that's what they do: ride dragons.

Hmm, maybe Vian's being a Sharktan isn't well-known, what with them having been persecuted in the past. You couldn't very well try to kill all the Sharktans knowing the greatest hero in the world was one, could you?

I like the sound of that. "Thingamajig of Solma." I think I'll call it that from now on.

But of course we will try, anyway.

I will not make the obvious joke about a mystical 'rod'.

Well, to get him to give the rod to you, you must pray a lot (a guide says 200 times -- I sure as heck didn't count) and then talk to him. If you've prayed enough, the dialogue will change:

Huh, you don't even have to be a hobbit to use it. Oh, and remember what the first lady said about it: it was used to dig holes. So, we might be going treasure hunting ala Zelda soon enough.

Cela 26th

Susan decided to take a look at that spring.

Comparing to the griffin, the PEGASUS has a lot more attack power, but less HP.

Leader Armer naturally has the ability to summon them, so he doesn't have to do this quest.

Oh, and there are certain conditions required to get the pegasus, but I kind of knew them ahead of time so ...

1. It has to be morning for it to show up at the spring.
2. The unit trying to catch it must be female. The game assumes all recruited characters are male, so you must have the female special unit (e.g. Susan, but not Andrew) catch it. If your leader is Robin, you actually have to have Robin catch it because both of her special units are male.

We can also catch it on the next map, the Karmak final map, because the spring is still there.

Anyway after this we tear Karmak apart.

Meteor Strike.

Solar Ray.

Looking at him, you'd think Andrew was the undead unit!

Next: Fort Dragonia? Wrong game.
